Design a commemorative poster around the theme "Which Side Are You On?"

We're looking for a poster that celebrates the spirit of the Occupy Movement and the classic Florence Reece Song, made famous by Pete Seeger, and recently updated by Ani DiFranco and recorded for her new album of the same name.

Suggested Theme & Style

Be inspired by vintage posters used to promote workers rights and unions from the early 20th century. Be inspired by the spirit and message of Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips and Woody Guthrie.

Original illustrations are preferred. We're looking for powerful art that conveys the struggle of the labor movement and is aesthetically is quality enough to hang on a wall in a gallery.

Look to the rich history and the movement that inspired this incredible protest song. "Which Side Are You On?" was originally written by Florence Reece, a coal miner's wife in Kentucky during the early 1930's to help speak up about the horrible conditions endured by workers. Florence's song became a rally cry for workers and helped inspire hope for the labor union movement. Florence and the others sang this song despite the very real threat of violence.

The song soon reached New York (Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger in particular). Over the years the song has been adopted, rewritten, and repurposed by various musicians. Pete Seeger used the song in the late 40's to recruit members for the National Maritime Union. The song was applied to the Civil Rights movement in a gospel style to address racial struggles in Georgia in the 60's. Billy Bragg repurposed the song in the 80's to address the British Miners' Strike and attacks on labor rights in England.

When Ani DiFranco performed “Which Side Are You On?” to celebrate Pete Seeger’s 90th Birthday at Madison Square Garden, she updated the lyrics, in the folk tradition, to reflect the current socio-political environment.
